Round Rock

About 20 miles north of downtown Austin on I-35, with a historic Main Street, Brushy Creek and plenty to do on weekends.

Living in Round Rock

Round Rock sits about 20 miles north of downtown Austin on I-35 in Williamson County. It has a historic downtown along Main Street and Brushy Creek, and it is home to Dell's headquarters, so many residents live close to where they work.

What we love about it

No visit is complete without a stop at Round Rock Donuts and their hand-cut glazed doughnuts. Spring through summer, the Round Rock Express play Triple-A baseball at Dell Diamond. Kalahari Resorts has a huge indoor waterpark for rainy or hot days, Round Rock Premium Outlets sits right on I-35, and the trails along Brushy Creek are a local favorite.

Getting around and schools

I-35, SH 45 and SH 130 (both tolled) and US 79 are the main routes. There is some local bus service but no rail, so most people drive. Round Rock ISD serves most of Round Rock, and some addresses near the edges are in neighboring districts. School boundaries can change and do not always follow city lines, so we always suggest confirming the assigned schools for any specific address with the district.

Homes you'll find here

Round Rock has a wide mix of single-family homes, from established neighborhoods to newer subdivisions, plus townhomes and some older homes near downtown. Many newer neighborhoods have their own pools, trails and community spaces.

Parks, events and weekends

Old Settlers Park is the city's largest park, with sports fields, trails and the Rock'N River water park. Downtown Round Rock hosts events on Main Street through the year, and the Fourth of July brings the Sertoma Independence Day Parade and Frontier Days. Brushy Creek's trail system connects parks across the area.

Before you buy

Check a few things by the home's address, not just the city name: the school district, the property tax rates on the county appraisal district's site, and whether the home is in a MUD, PID or HOA, each of which can add its own taxes, assessments or dues. Look the home up on FEMA's flood maps, get homeowners insurance quotes early, and confirm which electric provider serves it, since that varies across the Austin area. Much of Round Rock is in an Oncor area, where you choose a retail electric provider at PowerToChoose.org. SH 45 and SH 130 are tolled, so a toll tag is worth getting.
