Cedar Park & Leander

Neighboring cities northwest of Austin along US 183 and 183A, on the edge of the Hill Country, with parks, lakes and Old Town Leander.

Living in Cedar Park and Leander

Cedar Park and Leander are neighboring Williamson County cities about 20 to 30 miles northwest of downtown Austin, along US 183 and 183A on the edge of the Hill Country. Old Town Leander is the historic core.

What we love about it

Brushy Creek Lake Park in Cedar Park has a kayak launch, trails, a splash pad and playgrounds, and Devine Lake Park in Leander has a fishing lake and trails of its own. In the fall and winter, the Texas Stars, the Dallas Stars' AHL hockey team, play at the H-E-B Center.

Getting around and schools

US 183, the 183A Toll, RM 1431, RM 620 and SH 45 are the main routes. CapMetro's Red Line ends at Leander Station, and transit is more limited than in central Austin. Leander ISD serves Leander and most of Cedar Park, and part of Cedar Park is in Round Rock ISD. School boundaries can change and do not always follow city lines, so we always suggest confirming the assigned schools for any specific address with the district.

Homes you'll find here

Cedar Park has many established neighborhoods of single-family homes, while Leander has grown fast with newer master-planned communities, many with their own pools, parks and trails. Homes on larger lots can be found toward the edges of both cities.

Parks, events and weekends

Lakeline Mall and the shops along US 183 make errands easy, and the Hill Country is close for weekend drives. Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, northwest of Leander, has trails and overlooks, and Lake Travis is a short drive west. On game nights, the H-E-B Center brings hockey, concerts and shows.

Before you buy

Check a few things by the home's address, not just the city name: the school district, the property tax rates on the county appraisal district's site, and whether the home is in a MUD, PID or HOA, each of which can add its own taxes, assessments or dues. Look the home up on FEMA's flood maps, get homeowners insurance quotes early, and confirm which electric provider serves it, since that varies across the Austin area. Co-ops such as Pedernales Electric serve parts of the area, and the 183A Toll makes a toll tag useful.
