Tarrytown

Tree-lined streets just west of downtown, running toward Lake Austin, with Clarksville's historic cottages next door.

Living in Tarrytown and Clarksville

Just west of downtown Austin, Clarksville and Tarrytown sit side by side. Clarksville is one of Austin's oldest neighborhoods, with small historic cottages on quiet streets. Tarrytown runs west from there toward Lake Austin, with larger lots and mature trees.

What we love about it

Two of our favorite spots are right here: Laguna Gloria, the historic villa and gardens on Lake Austin, and Mayfield Park, known for its gardens and the peacocks that wander the grounds. Downtown, Lady Bird Lake and North Lamar favorites like BookPeople and Waterloo Records are a short drive or bike ride away, and Mount Bonnell's view over Lake Austin is close by too.

Getting around and schools

MoPac runs along the east side of Tarrytown, making it an easy drive to downtown and north Austin. Austin ISD serves the central city. School boundaries can change and do not always follow city lines, so we always suggest confirming the assigned schools for any specific address with the district.

Homes you'll find here

Clarksville has small historic cottages and bungalows close together on quiet streets. In Tarrytown you will find older homes, many updated over the years, alongside newer rebuilds, with larger lots as you head toward Lake Austin.

Parks, events and weekends

Deep Eddy Pool, Texas' oldest swimming pool, sits just south of Tarrytown near Lady Bird Lake. Pease Park runs along Shoal Creek with trails and open lawns, and the Treaty Oak, a centuries-old live oak, stands nearby. Lake Austin is right there for paddling, and downtown and Zilker are minutes away.

Before you buy

Check a few things by the home's address, not just the city name: the school district, the property tax rates on the county appraisal district's site, and whether the home is in a MUD, PID or HOA, each of which can add its own taxes, assessments or dues. Look the home up on FEMA's flood maps, get homeowners insurance quotes early, and confirm which electric provider serves it, since that varies across the Austin area. Some central Austin streets and homes carry historic designations that can affect what you are able to change on a remodel, so check with the City of Austin before you plan a project. Austin Energy provides electricity here.
