Plano

Directly north of Dallas in Collin County, with the Legacy business district in the west and a historic downtown arts district in the east.

Living in Plano

Plano sits directly north of Dallas in Collin County. West Plano's Legacy area is a major business district with corporate campuses, including Toyota's North American headquarters, alongside Legacy West's shops and restaurants. Downtown Plano is a historic arts district with brick streets.

What we love about it

Legacy Hall is a food hall with 20-plus stalls and bars, a brewery and an outdoor music stage. The Downtown Plano Arts District has independent boutiques, with Haggard Park for events. Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve in east Plano is a large city park and home of the Plano Balloon Festival each September.

Getting around and schools

US 75, the Dallas North Tollway, SH 121 and the Bush Turnpike are the main routes. DART's Red and Orange lines serve Downtown Plano, and the Silver Line starts at Shiloh Road. Plano ISD serves most of Plano, with parts of west Plano in Frisco ISD and Lewisville ISD. School boundaries can change and do not always follow city lines, so we always suggest confirming the assigned schools for any specific address with the district.

Homes you'll find here

Plano has established neighborhoods across east and central Plano, larger homes in many west Plano neighborhoods, and townhomes and condos near Legacy and downtown. Lot sizes and home ages vary a lot by area.

Parks, events and weekends

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in west Plano has paved and natural trails through woods and prairie. The Plano Balloon Festival lights up Oak Point Park each September, and Southfork Ranch, the home made famous by the TV series Dallas, is just east in Parker.

Before you buy

Check a few things by the home's address, not just the city name: the school district, the property tax rates on the county appraisal district's site, and whether the home is in a MUD, PID or HOA, each of which can add its own taxes, assessments or dues. Look the home up on FEMA's flood maps and get homeowners insurance quotes early. Hail is common in North Texas, so ask how the roof's age and any wind and hail deductible affect your coverage. Plano is in an Oncor area, so you choose your electric provider at PowerToChoose.org. The Tollway, SH 121 and the Bush Turnpike are tolled, so an NTTA TollTag is worth getting.
