Fort Worth

About 30 miles west of Dallas, with a walkable downtown, the Cultural District museums, Magnolia Avenue and the historic Stockyards.

Living in Fort Worth

About 30 miles west of Dallas, Fort Worth has a personality all its own. It has a walkable downtown around Sundance Square, the museums of the Cultural District, the Near Southside around Magnolia Avenue, and the Stockyards National Historic District.

What we love about it

At the Stockyards, a longhorn cattle drive heads down Exchange Avenue twice a day, with rodeos and Billy Bob's Texas nearby. The Cultural District is home to the Kimbell Art Museum and the Modern, alongside the Amon Carter, the science museum and the Cowgirl Museum. Downtown, Sundance Square has shops and restaurants and Bass Performance Hall hosts Broadway tours, ballet and concerts. Magnolia Avenue is the Near Southside's main street of independent restaurants, breweries and shops.

Getting around and schools

I-30, I-35W and I-820 are the main routes. TEXRail runs to DFW Airport, and the Trinity Railway Express connects to downtown Dallas. Fort Worth ISD serves most of Fort Worth, and northern parts of the city are in other districts, including Keller ISD. School boundaries can change and do not always follow city lines, so we always suggest confirming the assigned schools for any specific address with the district.

Homes you'll find here

Fort Worth has historic homes in neighborhoods like Fairmount and Arlington Heights, established neighborhoods near TCU, lofts and condos downtown, and many newer subdivisions in north and west Fort Worth.

Parks, events and weekends

The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo runs each January and February. The Fort Worth Botanic Garden, with its Japanese Garden, and the Fort Worth Zoo make easy day trips, Dickies Arena hosts concerts and events, and the Trinity Trails follow the river through the city.

Before you buy

Check a few things by the home's address, not just the city name: the school district, the property tax rates on the county appraisal district's site, and whether the home is in a MUD, PID or HOA, each of which can add its own taxes, assessments or dues. Look the home up on FEMA's flood maps and get homeowners insurance quotes early. Hail is common in North Texas, so ask how the roof's age and any wind and hail deductible affect your coverage. Homes in Fort Worth's historic districts may have design guidelines for exterior changes, so check with the city before you plan a project. Most of Fort Worth is in an Oncor area, where you choose your electric provider at PowerToChoose.org.
